Synopsis
Presented by Jenni Murray. Riots: we look at the root causes of the violence and looting on England's streets. MP Karen Buck, Brian Lightman from the Association of School and College Leaders and Janette Collins from The Crib youth outreach group in London, discuss the issue. SMOGS and DMOBS - all will be revealed; and author Jill Dawson talks about her new book.
Riots: What are the underlying causes?
As Parliament is recalled to debate the current unrest, we discuss the causes of the riots and examine what we can do to prevent young people becoming involved. We hear from some young people. And Jenni is joined by Janette Collins, who manages The Crib, a social inclusion project which works with young people in Hackney in London; Karen Buck, the Labour MP for Westminster North; and Brian Lightman, who is the General
Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders.
Jill Dawson
Jill Dawson is author of 'Fred and Edie', which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award and the Orange Prize. She is also an award winning poet and has held many Fellowships including the Creative Writing Fellowship at the University of East Anglia. She joins Jenni to discuss her latest work - Lucky Bunny. Set in London in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, it follows the adventures of the accomplished thief, Queenie Dove. She
narrates her colourful life in the East End from the depression, through the Blitz and Bethnal Green tube disaster.
Lucky Bunny by Jill Dawson, published by Sceptre on 18 August.
Baking clubs
Sales of home baking supplies have risen dramatically over the last three years, and more and more women have been joining baking clubs. One group that has been holding monthly meetings since December last year is the Clandestine Cake Club. But if everyone loves cake - why keep it a secret? Jennifer Chevalier investigates.
DMOB versus SMOG
Users of the parenting website Mumsnet have coined the acronym SMOG –Smug Mother of Girls – to describe judgemental, superior mothers of only girls who find boys loud, annoying and far too rambunctious. Meanwhile, mothers who know that in any given crowd of children it’s a boy, possibly her boy, who’s causing mayhem have invented their own term for themselves – DMOBs, or Defensive Mothers of Boys. Joining Jenni are mother of three boys Candida Crewe, who formed a club to champion sons, and mother of two girls Judith Woods who says that, secretly, every woman wants to "do the pink thing".
