  • Eileen MacKenney

Eileen MacKenney was born in the slums of south London in 1931 where, she says, violence and theft were a way of life. By nine, she had been expelled from school for beating up an older girl. By 14, she had survived the Blitz, a spell in care homes and seen her mother die from TB. And at 18, she was sentenced to three years after being caught stealing organ pipes from a bombed-out church. After stints in Holloway prison and borstal – where her maiden name of Killick was shortened to ‘Kill’ – she met and married career criminal Harry ‘Big H’ MacKenney and became part of south London’s criminal underworld. Now aged 80, Eileen talks to Jane about growing up in the Blitz, life in a borstal and why she regrets choosing crime.

‘Borstal Girl’ is published by Simon and Schuster.

Grace joins Jane and Jemima Kiss, digital media correspondent for the Guardian, to discuss how to negotiate your way through the follows, unfollows and twitchfork mobs, if it’s ever OK to retweet a compliment about yourself, and whether the smart girls are going over to Google Plus.
