After five and a half years working with Chris and 18 months on the Breakfast Show, today was Jonny Saunder's last show, as he is hanging up his headphones for the classroom, and re-trains to be a teacher.

So as Jonny emptied his locker and packed his sports bag for the last time, before embarking on a lifetime of marking homework, and lesson plans, we couldn't let him go without a few surprises, a trip down memory lane, and a few tears as well!

Singer Beverley Craven sang a new, special, personal rendition of Promise Me, Nicky from Westlife was on the phone to say goodbye and to invite Jonny to their concert, the Mystery Guests were Status Quo and cricketer Michael Vaughan came into the studio to reminisce about the Sporting Challenges and wave him goodbye.

    From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

    "On Jonny’s last day on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, I want to begin by saying: It has been an absolute privilege to have met such a genuine, decent colleague. Of course it’s sad that Jonny is leaving the team, yet with the others I am thrilled that you’re grasping this opportunity to become a teacher –a career which you have always been passionate about. I believe though teaching is more than a career; it’s a vocation – a calling really.

    As the poet Kahlil Gibran said: “The teacher does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.” A teacher, like a good parent, doesn’t create pupils in his own image; he inspires his class to discover their own greatness. As a shy teenager I thought I was talent - less and useless. It was a sympathetic teacher who encouraged me to be different. Without him I’d never have become a priest. That’s the power a good teacher has.

    Another of my heroes in life, and yours too Jonny, was the John Edward Wooden – the greatest college basket-ball coach of all time. He actually began life as a teacher of English and switched to sport in mid-life. By developing a team ethic he passed on a philosophy of life through sport. “Learn as if you were to live forever; live as if you to die tomorrow” was his core principle. He’d approve of what you’re doing Jonny because he believed that you “don’t give up on your dreams, lest your dreams give up on you.”

    He encouraged a spirit of independence in his players “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is who you really are, whilst your reputation is merely who others think you are.” So Jonny with the support of your family and the blessings and prayers of all of us: Be not afraid; go for it. You’ll be a great teacher because you have the ability to correct without causing resentment; you don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do. You have discovered a great truth of life: Failure is not fatal, but failure to change almost always is.

    Always remember the poet Maya Angelou’s words: “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” "
