Caitlin Moran
Caitlin Moran grew up in the 1980s in a council house in Wolverhampton, the eldest of eight children. By the time she was 15 she’d read lots of books about feminism – mainly to prove to her younger brother she was scientifically better than him. Now an award winning journalist and newspaper Columnist she’s rewritten “The Female Eunuch” for the 21st century. But you wouldn’t describe “How to be a Woman” as a classic feminist handbook. Part memoir, part rant she’s written candidly about her own experiences of menstruation, masturbation, pornography, misogyny, childbirth and abortion. Caitlin Moran joins Jenni in the studio to explain why she thinks the next wave of feminism needs to be as exciting as rock'n'roll.
'How to be a Woman' by Caitlin Moran is published by Ebury Press. -
The importance of having a birthing partner
In 2007 at Homerton hospital in Hackney mothers from Black African, Caribbean and Asian backgrounds were experiencing more stressful labours than other mothers, resulting in a greater number of emergency caesareans and higher cases of infant mortality than the rest of London. An innovative programme was set up using Volunteer Birth Buddies, who work alongside midwives, to provide support for these women during labour. The strategy has been so successful that the service is now offered to all pregnant women at the hospital. Felicity Finch attended a Birth-Buddy birth. Are volunteer doulas a great way of improving maternity services or a cheap way of coping with midwife shortages? Jenni is joined by Breedagh Hughes, Royal College of Midwives and Beverley Beech chair of AIMS – a charity which campaigns for improvements in maternity services.
