They have been divorced for a year or so and whilst she is irritated by his unconventional approach to parenting, there is clearly a residual affection between them too. Josie has to constantly struggle to keep a safe emotional distance from him, not wanting to be drawn back into his chaotic life, and it is this desire for space that causes Jackson much heartache.
