Monty Don, Carol Klein, Joe Swift and Rachel de Thame kick off the flower show season at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show. They revel in the beautiful flowers, all at the peak of perfection, in the floral marquee.

They hunt for planting inspiration in the 21 show gardens and each of them scour the showground to find which plant, garden, gadget or display to choose as their 'best in show'.

    Monty Don gets the chance to view the floral marquee at The Malvern Spring Show before it opens. He finds lupins and foxgloves flowering earlier than usual due to the unseasonably warm spring. He discovers some beautiful blue Meconopsis x sheldonii – Himalayan poppy and decides to find out more about them.
    Monty speaks with an expert and finds that, contrary to popular opinion, Himalayan poppies are not as difficult to grow as he thought.

    Carol’s Hidden Gems

    Carol visits the outdoor plant stands at The Malvern Spring Show to hunt for exciting and interesting plants. Erodium ‘Maryla’ – Storksbill, Erodium ‘Fripetta’ and Zaluzianskya ovata – Night Phlox are amongst the treats she finds at the first stand. She marvels at the plants on offer and is impressed with the way they are exhibited.
    Other discoveries she makes on her travels around the show are Anchusa azurea ‘Loddon Royalist’ – Italian bugloss, Iris ‘Kent Pride’, Sanguisorba menziesii – Japanese burnet, Trollius x cultorum ‘Cheddar’ – Globeflower and Campanula ‘Sarastro’ – Bellflower.

    Monty Visits ‘My Very Local Veg Garden’

    Monty Don meets with Hannah Genders who has sourced all the elements for her show garden on a bicycle. Monty is delighted to find purple kale growing within the flower border. He admires the climbing beans and a compost heap built from hazel sticks. They discuss the benefits of planting flowers with vegetables to attract pollinating bees and Monty finds a unique planter made entirely from recycled material.
