Sofi Oksanen
Sofi Oksanen is a Finnish-Estonian novelist who’s been called a “literary Lady Gaga”. With her purple hair, gothic makeup and passionately feminist politics, the 34-year-old has a rock-star status at home and, like fellow Nordic writers Stieg Larsson and Hillary Mankell, has taken Scandinavian fiction to a mass international audience. Her breakthrough came with her latest book Purge, a dark tale of sex trafficking and abuse which has won a swathe of awards and become a global top 10 bestseller since it was published last year. She joins Jane to talk about why she chose her hard-hitting material and why the job of the writer is to make us witness what we don’t want to see.
Purge is published in paperback by Atlantic Books
The art of a good presentation
The ability to do a good presentation is key to winning contracts, growing a company and it can be the difference between success and failure. But many people struggle to pitch effectively, become overcome with nerves and don’t deliver. So, what makes a good presentation? What should you avoid? And how can you beat anxiety and learn to talk with confidence if you aren’t a natural public speaker? Apprentice runner up Ruth Badger and Laura Tenison, founder and managing director of pregnancy-to-preschool retailer JoJo Maman Bebe join Jane to discuss the art of delivering a presentation, and share tips from their professional experience.
The Apprentice Series 7 returns on Tuesday 10th May at 9pm on BBC One.
Restorative Justice
Restorative Justice brings together the victim and the perpetrator of a crime or conflict. At present fewer than 1% of victims have access to the restorative process in England and Wales and it is rarely used in cases of serious crime. Joanne Nodding is one of a handful of rape victims to seek restorative justice, and the first in Britain to speak about it in public. Felicity Finch talks to Joanne about the experience. And Lizzie Nelson, director of the Restorative Justice Council joins Jane to discuss the wider implications.
The fashion of Mad Men
Any fan of the television series Mad Men will tell you that the clothes form a major part of the show’s appeal. As the programme’s Emmy award-winning costume designer, Janie Bryant’s enviable task is to match each character with their perfect wardrobe. She draws on both genuine vintage pieces and painstakingly made copies, with eye-watering underwear arrangements to make them flatter in all the right places. Anyone who’s seen Joanie sashay down the office in a pencil skirt will know what that means! Janie joins Jane to discuss how she created Joan, Peggy and Betty’s iconic looks.
