Presented by Jane Garvey. Throughout the Second World War, women played a crucial role in the war effort. We consider the future for the Liberal Democrats' female MPs and as part of our Women in Business season look at the importance of advertising. • Women in the Second World War

Whether they were in the services, working as a nurse, employed in a munitions factory or simply keeping family life going, all of Britain’s women were touched by the Second World War. Jane is joined by Virginia Nicholson, whose new book, ‘Millions Like Us’ tells the story of women’s experience during the War and in its aftermath.

‘Millions Like Us – Women’s Lives in War and Peace 1939 – 1949’ is published by Viking. It will be Radio 4's 'Book of the Week' at 09.45 every morning from May 2nd.

  • Do the Lib Dems have a problem with women?

The Liberal Democrats could end up with no female MPs after the next election if current poll ratings continue, a report by the Fabian Society has warned. The Lib Dems already have the smallest number of female MPs of any of the parties. Last year Party Leader Nick Clegg admitted they were “too male and too pale”, so how has this happened, and what is being done to address the imbalance? The Chair of the Liberal Democrats’ Diversity Engagement Group, Baroness Sal Brinton, joins Jane along with the Director of the Fabian Women’s Network and co-author of the report Seema Malhotra.

  • Unpopular children

What should you do if your child struggles to make friends? A new theory suggests that an unpopular child has a learning difficulty, a bit like dyslexia, and can be taught the rules of friendship. But how far should a parent go to help their child make friends? Jane talks to Learning and Behaviour specialist, Noel Janis-Norton, and to Jennie Bristow who writes on parenting culture.

  • Women In Business - the use of advertising

As part of our Women in Business series we discuss the role of advertising in developing a successful company. At what point should you invest money in an advertising campaign, and where and through what medium should you focus your message? The three mentees from the Women in Business series discuss how they have used advertising, and Jane speaks to Nicola Mendelsohn from the independent creative agency Karmarama, who is also the incoming president of the Institute of Practioners in Advertising.
