Synopsis

Episode image for 11/04/2011

With Jenni Murray. Mothers' and babies' lives are being put in danger by the UK's over-stretched and under-resourced maternity services. So are super units the way forward? Jenni explores the issues. Ursula Sladec has just won the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize. She tells Jenni how her quest to limit Germany's dependence on nuclear power ended up with her, and her like-minded neighbours, owning the local electricity supply. Back in 1971, the feminist artist Margaret Harrison famously depicted Hugh Hefner as a bunny girl. She joins Jenni to discuss a new retrospective of her work. Also, the growing outdoor sport of Parkour and the pleasures of the European Picture Book Collection.

Electric rebel

Ursula Sladek has helped transform energy supply in Germany. Dismayed at the Chernobyl disaster 25 years ago she and some neighbours wanted to limit their dependence on nuclear power. They started by running an energy saving competition; then launched a nation-wide campaign to raise the money to buy their local electricity supplier; and now run Germany’s first cooperatively owned renewable energy company, supplying electricity to more than 100-thousand homes.

Margaret Harrison

Margaret Harrison is one of Britain’s best known feminist artists. She was one of the pioneers of British feminist art in the 1960s and 1970s and was one of the ‘unruly band of feminists’ who disrupted the Miss World contest in 1970. She dropped off the radar in Britain in the 1980s but is better known in the USA where she lived and worked with a group of likeminded women artists on the East Coast. But a new exhibition is opening in London this week in which some of Margaret’s works – old and new – will be shown alongside the work of post-feminist performance artists The Girls.

I am a Fantasy by Margaret Harrison & The Girls, is at PayneShurvell, London from 15 April to 21 May 2011

Maternity Services – Are Super Units the way forward?

Mothers’ and babies’ lives are being put in danger by the UK's over-stretched and under-resourced maternity services. The latest figures from the Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries show that 14 NHS trusts have up to double the amount of baby deaths in the unit. What’s going wrong? And what’s the solution? Jenni will be joined by Tony Falconer, President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Frances Day-Stirk, Director of Learning Research and Practice Development at the Royal College of Midwives.

V&A Jewellery: Heneage Jewel

For most of us jewellery is seen as pure decoration; but it can also be about wealth, status and power. The Heneage or Armada Jewel, for instance, is a symbol of all these attributes. It was given by Queen Elizabeth I to her Privy Councilor and Vice Chamberlain of the Royal Household, Sir Thomas Heneage after the defeat of the Armada in 1588. This Heneage Jewel with the golden miniature of Elizabeth I on the front is one of the prize exhibits of the V&A’s Jewellery Gallery. Corinne Julius was shown the exquisite locket by the Gallery’s consultant curator Beatriz Chadour Sampson.

Parkour

You may remember an advert for BBC One which was first shown in 2002 and featured a man called David Belle running over buildings, up and down walls, in fact, overcoming whatever obstacle confronted him. It was the first time we’d seen a sport called Parkour or Freerunning. It started on the streets of France and is now practised all over the world. Agota Mahop runs Parkour workshops specifically for women. Anna Bailey joined her at an outdoor class on a housing estate in south west London to find out why the sport is taking off.
