  • Confession: "You Can Stick It"

    Hi Simon

I heard your recent Confession about the guy messing about in a band, and you asked if there were any Confessions about other band members. Well Simon, I was part of a well known group in the early 80s. At the time, I had a massive 22 piece drum kit, which I was very proud of. However, after asking the senior members of the band if I could use my full set-up and do a drum solo, time after time this request was refused, and night after night I had to set up a scaled-down kit.

One night when we were playing a very popular night spot, I really wanted to set up the complete kit & give it loads of noise !! After 5 consecutive nights with the others taking centre stage, I was getting really fed up, but again the other guys insisted I played with just the basic kit, claiming that there wasn’t enough space for it on the stage.

In this club they had a sound cut-out system which meant when it hit certain decibels it cut out completely for a few seconds, and cut the electricity off - bad news for electric guitarists but it did mean that the sheer raw noise of the drums could carry on alone should that happen!

This gave me an idea, and so I decided that I had no option to take matters into my own hands. So as soon as we arrived at the venue, I sneaked off and found the cut-off switch and secretly turned it down really low. This meant that when we started playing it didn’t take much at all to set it off and the electricity cut out, silencing all of the other bewildered band members, and leaving me to drum my heart out all alone. Of course this procedure was repeated again and again, and by the end of the night I was hot and sweaty but elated – having done no less than 6 lengthy drum solos, concluding with a 12-minute spectacular finale.

The rest of the band never found out what caused their instruments to fail, and couldn’t understand what went wrong as we had played there many times before – however, the management of the venue weren’t impressed, and we were never asked back. So I’m sorry to the other band members.
