Alfresco

Duration: 1 hour

The Bikers go in search of three mums who love cooking and eating outdoors. Rebecca's Spanish family recipes are perfect for an al fresco feast - tapas - and her tortilla, garlic prawns and meatballs don't disappoint.

Lots of European countries have an outdoor eating culture, so the Bikers visit brother and sister Karl and Marika, whose Hungarian roots provide inspiration for huge family picnics.

The third mum, Jayne, is a pudding queen, bringing the taste of the outdoors inside with vivid fruit flavours.

Along the way, the bikers rustle up old-fashioned potted beef and potted salmon - the perfect food to eat while you are messing about in boats.

At the Bikers' recipe fair, they cook minced beef pinwheels, and food historian Gerard Baker sets the boys and three visitors a skills challenge - sushi rolling. After all that hard work, the perfect foodie day closes with a classic al fresco banquet.

  • Star Mum 1: Rebecca

    Star Mum 1: Rebecca

Rebecca’s childhood was spent moving all over Europe as the daughter of parents in the RAF. For a while they were stationed in Gibraltar, which Rebecca loved because it meant frequent visits to her nana and auntie in Madrid. With the heart of any Spanish home being the kitchen, it is no wonder that Rebecca developed a love for Spanish food - and tapas in particular… Which is why the bikers couldn’t resist dropping in to taste some of her great family recipes…

Star Mum 2: Brother and Sister Marika and Karl

Karl and Marika’s father fled to England from Hungary during the 1956 uprising. He settled in the midlands, and started a family. While he never returned to live in Hungary, he did pass on many Hungarian traditions to his children. Today Karl and Marika still frequently get their own families together to go camping and cook traditional Hungarian food in the outdoors, just as their father taught them.

    Star Mum 3: Jayne Rawlings

Jayne grew up in Halifax with a mother who had very clear ideas about how a home should be kept. It was from her that Jayne learnt everything about domestic management! However, it wasn’t Jayne, but her daughter Claire who first contacted the Bikers. Claire described her mum as the ‘queen of puddings’ and then dropped into conversation that her mum had had an unusual change of career in recent times. So, with the promise of some amazing puds and a fascinating story or two, the Bikers couldn’t resist the chance to visit Jayne and share some fantastic family cooking…
