Francis Russell

is an art historian and author. He first went to Syria in 1991 and has been a frequent visitor ever since. Francis enjoys the deep sense of history and the accessibility of ancient and significant monuments. He particularly loves the areas West of Aleppo. Before travelling, Francis likes to do extensive research and will read every conceivable book and map. He has now published his own guide entitled ‘Places in Syria: a Pocket Grand Tour’.

Richard Boggs

is a trainer with the British Council; he has worked for over a decade in the Arabic-speaking world, teaching in Yemen, Lebanon and Khartoum where he is currently based. Richard was evacuated to Syria from Yemen during the civil war. Although he first found Syria sedate and even dull, he soon fell in love with the country and went on to live there for a few years. In his book Hammaming in the Sham, a tour round the Turkish baths of Syria, he uncovers the traditions of bathing in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere.

is a writer and journalist.
