  • Pause For Thought

From Baroness Neuberger DBE, known to PFT as Rabbi Julia:

"We went for a long walk in the Chilterns this last weekend, in gorgeous sunny weather, warm enough - in February - to sit outside for lunch and to see a few early chicks around the hens, snowdrops in abundance, and the first daffodil buds everywhere. Spring was in the air... And, having just been at several funerals, reading those lovely words from Psalm 103 about how we blossom like the flowers of the field and then are no more, there was a glorious sense of rebirth.

But this year, alongside my regular joy at the end of a cold winter, my thoughts turned to many of our young people in Britain, and around the world, in the spring of their lives, whose opportunities are getting so much more limited. We heard yesterday from Jonathan Portes, new head of the National Institute for Economic and Social Research, that hundreds of thousands of young people face bleak employment prospects throughout their lives unless we take urgent action. Youth unemployment has reached close to a million people. So whilst we rejoice in the abundance of new birth and flowers, should we not also worry about young unemployed people, when it is hard to see how they will easily get on to the ladder of life and find their summer?

What about young people heavily in debt? Never able to buy somewhere to live? Seeing opportunities closing to them which older people - even people ten years older - are still finding open? And if we are right to be worried, shouldn’t this spring’s signs of joy and hope also give us the resolution to help the young, facing the effects of recession and worried about their future? We all want there to be a warm relationship between the generations in our society - at best that can be warm and creative, and allows everyone to seek, and gain fulfilment. We need to make sure that that comes about, for all our sakes."
