  • Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

"Friday 11th February 2011 was always going to be an auspicious day. It was the 21st anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, and then, of course, it became the day we’ll remember when the Egyptian people were triumphant in their revolution.

During the protests, a friend wrote from Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the uprising, “The barrier of fear has been broken.”

Once the people had overcome their inner fears of the regime; the fear of the bullets, batons and tanks they faced on the street became surmountable. The protests snowballed and maintained their momentum, until eventually President Mubarak resigned.

The conquest of fear is a necessary prerequisite for the conquest of tyranny; indeed it is necessary to affect any form of change.

And that includes the fear of failure, the fear of embarrassment, the fear of change itself that inhibits our ability to move forward. But when we overcome our fears, we gain strength. As we increase in strength, we are better able to confront our fears. It is a virtuous cycle.

None of us want our fears to control our lives. None of us want to look back and see what life could have been if we had not been too afraid to live it to the fullest. As Roosevelt said, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

And yet it is so easy to be held back by our fears, to live our lives in its shadows. We do fear; there is no point ignoring that reality. Simply, we have to face our fears, confront them and be victorious over them.

Mandela wrote, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Let us breakdown the barriers of our fears, confront the mental batons and bullets that hold us back from achieving true freedom – the freedom within ourselves."
