    Winifred Holtby (1898 – 1935) was born in Rudstone, Yorkshire. At eighteen, she attended Oxford University’s Somerville College where she met life-long friend Vera Brittain. Holtby worked as a journalist and novelist. South Riding was her last novel, completed just before her death from kidney disease in 1935. The novel was published posthumously to wide acclaim, winning the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1936.
