Synopsis
Folk songstress and master of atmospherics PJ Harvey joins Steve for an in depth interview on her new album 'Let England Shake' ahead of its release on Monday. In an exclusive Album of the Day+, which see 6 Music playing every track in full for the first time anywhere, Harvey talks frankly about her refusal to go over old ground, her sensitivity to current events and the possibility of acting as a 'song correspondent' on the frontline. She also talks of her love of the Dorset countryside.
Plus Steve meets another Good Day Bad Day caller to find out about their musical history and digs out another lost 45 from his extensive collection. Plus some more amazing music from the likes of The Faces, Faithless and The Futureheads.
Lammos Lost 45s - INNOCENT VICARS – She’s Here (1980)
You know what it’s like in your first week at college. You invariably get to Thursday and a few people in your class suggest going for a drink. And it’s in these few hours that friendships are formed which can last for years.
I sat down with a guy from Luton called Greg and we had nothing in common musically. NOTHING. He liked Bob Dylan. I liked The Newtown Neurotics. We might never have become mates if it hadn’t of been for this record.
I can’t even remember who brought it up, but they were a local band to him – and I’d bought the record after hearing it on the John Peel show. The coincidence that we both liked this utterly obscure seven-inch single led to us becoming best pals throughout our journalist training and beyond.
Oh and there’s the small matter that of it being the first record to feature a very young Richard Norris on guitar. Norris, would later go on to have hits with The Grid and form a musical partnership with DJ Errol Alkan.
