Sharing their thoughts about the UK economy, Geoff Cooper, chief executive of Travis Perkins; Michael Acton Smith who launched Mind Candy, the social online gaming company behind Moshi Monsters; and Daniela Barone Soares, the high flying banker who went on to pioneer the "venture philanthropy" Impetus Trust.

    Geoff Cooper joined the company in February 2005 and was appointed Chief Executive on 1 March 2005. He is a chartered management accountant and worked in management consultancy before joining Gateway (now Somerfield plc) as Finance Director in 1990. In 1994 he became Finance Director of UniChem plc, subsequently Alliance UniChem plc (which later became part of Alliance Boots plc), where he was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in 2001. He is non-executive Chairman of Dunelm Group Plc.

    Daniela Barone Soares, Chief Executive, Impetus Trust

    Daniela Barone Soares joined Impetus Trust as Chief Executive in June 2006. Most of her seventeen-year career has been in private equity and venture capital, with BancBoston Capital in the U.S., Europe and in the U.K. Daniela was instrumental in developing their practice in Spain, Italy and Portugal. She also worked for Citigroup in Brazil and Goldman Sachs in New York. Prior to joining Impetus, Daniela was Head of Institutional Support at Save the Children, where she was responsible for strategic development and fundraising. She has a Bsc in Economics from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Daniela has long been committed to finding innovative ways to break the cycle of poverty and create new opportunities for the economically disadvantaged. In 2008, she was chosen for the Independent on Sunday "Happy List" as one of the top 100 people who make Britain a better place to live. In the same year, Impetus was winner of the grantmaker category of the UK Charity Awards for being an example of excellence in the sector, from which other organisations can learn. Impetus has been the chosen charity for the British Venture Capital Association for the past three years.

    Michael Acton Smith, Chief Executive, Mind Candy

    Michael has been fascinated by games and puzzles ever since receiving a copy of Masquerade for his seventh birthday.

    In his early twenties he co-founded the online retailer, Firebox.com. Firebox recently featured in 13th place on the Sunday Times Fast Track list of fastest growing companies in Britain.

    Michael launched Mind Candy in 2003 and development on Perplex City began soon after. Michael says his interest in monsters probably stems from reading too much Dr Seuss and Maurice Sendak as a child.

    Michael is an outspoken member of the UK entrepreneurial community, and has strong opinions on the perceived lack of support and enthusiasm for UK start-ups, especially in comparison US counterparts. Michael also forms part of the Expert Council 2010/11 at the core of the CoolBrands list of brands to watch in the coming year.

    This Week's Business Doctor - Clive Rich

    Clive Rich is a professional negotiator and a digital media lawyer. He has a 25 year pedigree in the Music, Entertainment and Digital sectors as a deal-maker, lawyer, and strategic director.

    He offers negotiation services to clients either as a trusted guide, advising them on the best way to get more of what they want, or by actually negotiating deals on their behalf, or by providing one-to-one or one-to-many coaching services.

    As a media lawyer Clive currently runs his own firm, "Rich Futures Limited" Through Rich Futures he provides legal services to clients as diverse as the Royal Opera House, San Disk, MySpace and the Technology Strategy Board. He has also closed deals on behalf of clients with the likes of Tesco, the Mail on Sunday and Quintessentially. He runs his law firm in association with the top 30 UK law firm, Olswang. With Olswang he provides a service called "Orbit" which provides a galaxy of legal advice to Digital SME's.

    Clive also has a track record of running business development units profitably. During a 17 year long career with Bertelsmann's BMG and then Sony/BMG he ran BMG's New Media division and then created and ran Sony BMG’s Futures Division. This division was responsible for all Sony BMG’s new and developing business – including its Digital Music business, TV programming and brand partnerships. During this period, Futures developed a US$50 million annual turnover, including a six-fold increase in Digital income. It was also instrumental in the successful development of Simon Cowell’s ‘Syco’ TV Joint venture with Sony BMG. During this period Clive successfully closed deals with digital partners including Apple, MSN, Yahoo, Vodafone, T-Mobile, and Napster. He also helped close deals on behalf of Simon Cowell's Syco with ITV, Fox Television, 19 Entertainment and Fremantle in relation to formats such as "X Factor", American Idol" and "Got Talent".

    Prior to taking on these commercial responsibilities for BMG and Sony BMG, Clive successfully ran Business Affairs departments in the UK and Europe for BMG, responsible for negotiating and drafting agreements with artists, producers, writers, production companies, and for M and A work. During this period Clive:
    - negotiated BMG’s agreements with 19 Entertainment for Pop Idol recording rights worldwide – agreements which have since generated well-over US$500 million of contribution for BMG worldwide.
    - introduced a ground-breaking new artist recording contract which set a new benchmark for standards of transparency, perceived fairness and ease of use in UK recording agreements.
    - negotiated major, multi-territory deals for BMG with Dido, Annie Lennox, Take That, Robbie Williams, Westlife, MTV and Italian superstar Eros Ramazzotti.
    - chaired PPL, the cross-industry society which licenses the UK Record Industry’s recordings to users such as BBC TV and Radio, ITV and independent local radio. Clive helped grow annual revenues to £60 million.
    - masterminded a highly successful Executive Negotiation Training Programme. This became BMG’s most successful training programming over a 10-year period

    Clive has also held Business Affairs posts with BMG Music Publishing, WEA Records and K-tel. He is a qualified Barrister and was educated at Lincoln College, Oxford and the Inns of Court School of Law.
