    BRUCE CROWTHER
Aware of the working and living conditions of farmers and workers in developing countries, Bruce campaigned to enlist the support of local churches and shops in the small town of Garstang to use and supply Fairtrade products. By doing so he hoped to establish fairer trade systems and better standards of living for these communities. Garstang was declared the world’s first ever Fairtrade town in 2000 and there are now over 400 worldwide. His involvement with the churches led Bruce to become a Quaker and he shares his belief that it was God who mapped out for him his own personal journey.

    DR ALISON SYKES
Alison is a consultant in Emergency medicine in a busy A&E hospital. Four years ago her son became seriously ill and she was convinced that he would die. During the worst time of his illness she became aware that she was not alone and experienced a prevailing sense of calm. This lead her to the realisation that God is a loving father who, though he can’t always put things right, will try and guide us through difficult times. She talks of how her experience has made her more understanding of those she takes care of, treating them with empathy and compassion.

    LIZ NICHOLLS
Liz Nicholls is the Head teacher at Ripley St Thomas Church of England High School in Lancaster. Its founder, Julia Ripley, encouraged not only formal education for the original pupils but introduction to the completely different environments of agriculture and horticulture, a tradition that continues to this day. The school has its own working farm and Liz explains how learning about farming gives the pupils an invaluable insight into their role as stewards of God’s creation and develops mind, body and spirit in preparation for life.

    LIZ BAGLEY
Liz worships at the Priory in Lancaster and is one of the founders of ‘East Meets West’ a group of women whose aim is to find out more about the cultures of different faith groups in the city. Liz helps organise activities that will develop friendships and encourage dialogue; the group recently came together to produce a piece of crewel work, a blend of English and Indian styles, which was then blessed in the Priory.
