Character Profile :Connie Carter
An alley cat of a girl, feisty and opinionated, not scared to stand up for herself. Slightly ‘common’ compared to the other working class girls on the farm.
She’s got an eye for opportunity and uses her intelligence to make life easier for herself.
She’s charming as well – and prone to tall stories. In truth, Connie has no family and is lived in children’s homes until she joined the munitions factories.
Following her engagement at the end of series two, two months on, Connie and Henry finally have an engagement party. However, Connie’s happiness is short-lived when old boyfriend Danny Sparks turns up. -
character profile: Joyce Fisher
Straight-forward, patriotic, and not overly bright, Joyce tries her best to serve her country. After all, everyone is doing their bit, and Joyce doesn’t want to let the side down. She tackles her posting with an enthusiasm that outstrips her ability.
After two months waiting every morning for the post and worrying about what has happened to John; she finally hears some news on John but it isn’t what she expected… -
character profile: Iris Dawson
Ditzy, easy-fooled, passionate, inquisitive and child-like, Iris is a quirky looking girl from Bristol where she lived with her extended family in a cramped terraced house.
Iris has been at the farm a few weeks before the series starts, and has fitted in well. Frank Tucker spots that she cannot read – after her illiteracy nearly causes a nasty tractor accident. -
Character profile :Lady Ellen Hoxley
It’s all about appearances and conducting oneself the correct way. A Lady of the Manor from a long line of nobility, Lady Ellen is brittle and prone to ‘her nerves’. A whirling dervish of energy, Lady Ellen has fingers in many pies – taking instructions about the land girls from the local WLA rep; organising dances for the workers, GIs and land girls; raising funds for the war effort. Genuinely passionate about doing her bit for the war, Lady Ellen enjoys organising and rallying people.
Two months on, Ellen’s house has been commandeered, by a temporary military hospital. As Ellen resigns herself to getting her hands dirty, she realises that she knows one of the doctors – Richard Channing – from her past. He is the man she truly loved, but rejected in favour of marrying Lawrence. -
Character profile: Doctor Richard Channing
Handsome, and charming Richard Channing is a dream man. Dedicated to his job as a doctor in the Condover Military Hospital, intelligent and witty, he turns many female heads in Helmstead – with his altruistic works.
Twenty years ago, Channing was a suitor of Ellen’s. However, she was pressurised – by family – to choose Lawrence as a husband (as Channing was only a trainee doctor at that stage and not of the right class).
Consequently, Channing has a chip on his shoulder when he meets Ellen again, and despite being attracted to her, finds it hard to get over the fact he was passed over for Lawrence. -
Character profile: Frank Tucker
Dennis Tucker’s younger brother – and the ‘bookish’ one of the Tucker clan. Both brothers have worked the land all their lives, but Frank is more gentle, less pompous (although just as socially awkward).
Frank is living at Pasture Farm (a favour from Finch for what Dennis did) as he waits for news of his brother. When Vernon returns from hospital, he and his son, Walter want to get revenge on the Tuckers. They target Frank (and Iris by default). Soon the threats explode into violence and Frank has a brutal fight with Walter. -
character profile: Vernon Storey
Secretive, harsh, gruff and passive aggressive, Vernon Storey could suck the life out of a party in two seconds. A man who gives nothing and who takes everything. A black hole of a person that doesn’t seem to operate in the same social restrictions as the rest of us.
Vernon slept with Esther, taking advantage of her desperation to raise money for Martin’s operation. When Finch found out, he wanted revenge, but Tucker did it for him (unknown to Finch) and Vernon was beaten to a pulp. But now the tables have turned and Vernon will get his revenge.
