Synopsis

Episode image for 28/01/2011

Sir Elton John co-hosts the Chris Evans Breakfast Show. WARNING: This programme contains unintentional strong language.

We'll have him all to ourselves, and that means so will you. He will be avoiding Jonny's intimidation tactics when he judges Head to Headlines, and we'll be playing some of his favourite songs.

We shall be employing our famous "bank" of video cameras in the studio so you can watch the whole interview live.

Come to the Radio 2 website from 08:00 on Friday, and you'll be able to watch video of Sir Elton in the studio with the Chris Evans team LIVE. Go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio2.

We had Elton John in the studio!

Pause For Thought

From Nick Baines, the Bishop of Croydon:

"Hot news! Today is a very significant day for motorsport lovers: it’s 100 years to the day that a Frenchman won the first Monte Carlo Rally. (Not quite the original Rocket Man, but, anyway...)

Well, closer to home for me is that yesterday was the 23rd birthday of my youngest son, Andrew, who is working with street children in South Africa at the moment. He’s out there for six months – at his own vast expense – and we miss him. So, last night we raised a glass to him – and ran up a huge phone bill at our vast expense.

But, isn’t one day just the same as any other, really? It’s still just the same 24 hours with the sun rising in the morning and setting in the evening? Why do we make some days more special than others? Now, you might well think this is a waste of thinking space – I mean, isn’t it obvious that we just do see some days as more significant than others?

Well, I think there is something deeper than this that actually goes to the heart of how we are made. In the creation story at the beginning of Genesis in the Bible, God brings order out of the chaos of the world’s first day... and the same compulsion or instinct has been going on in us ever since. It’s as if we’re made to bring shape or pattern to all the stuff life throws at us that seems messy or incoherent. So, we mark anniversaries and birthdays and particular times of the year, putting down markers and creating rhythms.

Yet, it goes even deeper. I think there’s something brilliant about giving shape to time itself – to living with and through the seasons of the year and resisting the pressure to rush it all. Strawberries in spring and sprouts at Christmas and all that.

Another day, another year. Life’s never boring – and it never stands still."
