  • Early closing day.

Long gone are the days when the footmen wore wigs
    When peasants contentedly husbanded pigs
When dusty old shops would display things in sacks
And no one had ever heard of a: plasti, digi, poly, pack.

Or mass consumerism, or retail therapy
No folks still wore rags and were afraid of the dark
But what’s this? (The land) it is empty the peasants have gone
Yes, they’ve gone with the rich to the retail park.

    Where sales assistants influential
    Maximise one’s spend potential
Massaging the cortex and the throbbing frontal lobe

    Stimulating mental skyways
    Triggering the ‘yes, yes highway’
Jiggling our senses with their semiotic code

To take our money twice and thrice
Decreeing that the price is nice
With gestures soft and quite precise
    Directing us to paradise

Where the poor come in cars
And the rich come in choppers
And in place of the butlers
    Come ‘personal shoppers’

In the brave new, new world of ‘Yes I still can’
With mantra: ‘I shop therefore I am’

    And yes it feels good
    And yes it feels bright
    And yes it feels clean
    And yes it is right

To chip and pin and swipe and spend
Again and again and again and again!

    For shopping’s what we want
    And shopping’s what we need
    And shopping equals growth
And growth is how we feed

Oh but is there still a place for that dusty little shop?
Where customers are oddities and someone stopped the clock
(And turned it back to a time when)
People just muddled along in there own peculiar way
And closed for lunch and still adhered
    To early closing day.
