Synopsis
Panorama reveals the controversial video-taped interview with the mother of Baby P and asks whether crucial warning signs were missed.
Tracey Connelly tells clear lies in the training interview with a senior social worker. But she also gives some vital clues about what was going on in her son Peter's life.
Panorama investigates whether these clues were adequately followed up, and examines the ground-breaking research into child protection that is now a part of Baby P's legacy.
Videotaped clues from Baby P's mother were missed
Baby Peter's tragic first birthday
Baby Peter Connelly's first birthday was filmed on a mobile phone by his mother, Tracey Connelly. Baby Peter died five months later.
As reporter Alison Holt explains, the man in the video is Steven Barker, Tracey Connelly's boyfriend. In a taped interview with a senior social work manager at Haringey council one month later, Connelly denied the existence of a boyfriend, but did talk about her friend "Steven".
Both were convicted of causing or allowing Peter's death.
Teaching an entire city to become better parents
In the aftermath of the tragic death of Baby Peter Connelly, once known only as Baby P, child protection is in the spotlight like never before.
Panorama's Alison Holt visited Glasgow to see how a new child protection initiative - the positive parenting programme which is borrowed from America - is attempting to improve the way all children in the city are parented, regardless of their family background.
