His glitzy tower blocks have changed the New York skyline and helped turn him into a multi-billionaire in the process.
The all-American tycoon is now crossing to the UK to build a huge golf resort on the sand-dunes near Aberdeen.
The Trump Dynasty
Emily Maitlis meets Trump and his closest family, interviewing the three Trump children who work for him – Don Jnr.(seen above), Ivanka and Eric – as well as his wife Melania.
The resulting profile puts Trump’s current Scottish development in the context of his family history and a long career of dramatic ups and downs.
The Trump Empire
Trump’s business strategy, he wrote in his early autobiography The Art of the Deal, is to “aim very high and then I just keep pushing and pushing and pushing to get what I’m after.”Read more about the Life and Times of Donald Trump
But there was also a distinctive look to Trump buildings, which were all marble, gold and reflective glass. Trump Tower, on New York’s Fifth Avenue is his home and office.
For all his early success, Trump’s career went into crisis at the end of the 1980’s, when a recession put him $900m in the red. It was Trump’s valuable name that saved him when his creditors had to decide whether to pull the plug on his empire. Trump fought to bring his business back from the brink, and into profit again.
Showbusiness was a natural extension of Trump’s activities. He began by buying a beauty pageant business, Miss Universe and Miss USA. Today he introduces the Miss USA contest live on American network television, this year from Las Vegas.
British TV producer Mark Burnett, who lives in the States, explains how Trump influenced him when he arrived as an ex-paratrooper in California in the eighties. While he was selling tee-shirts on Venice Beach, “to fill the time, I would read The Art of the Deal by Donald Trump, which was totally inspiring.”
In a few years, Burnett had made himself one of America’s most successful producers, and signed Trump up for The Apprentice – which became the NBC network’s top show and a global TV franchise. Britain’s Apprentice series is just one of many international spinoffs from Burnett and Trump’s original American hit.
Trump says he’s worth $6 billion. But the authoritative Forbes Rich List has always given him a smaller figure than he claims, currently $2.4 billion. Trump protests: “I see people on the list that are at a high level, and I sure as hell wouldn’t switch my assets for their’s …but I’m a private company, people don’t know my assets.”
