Only 16% of UK businesses are owned by women so are women-only investment networks the answer to releasing funds for female entrepreneurs? Jane talks to Sally Goodsell of Finances SouthEast and Julie Meyer founder of Ariadne Capital and dragon on BBC's Online Dragon's Den. And we have the latest news on Hormone Replacement Therapy and hear about the female boxers training for the 2012 Olympics.
Funding Women in Business
Only 16% of UK businesses are owned by women, and women in particular struggle to attract investment for new ventures. Women in the UK are also traditionally more cautious when it comes to lending money but there are now more female millionaires under the age of 44 than male. So are women-only investment networks the answer to releasing funds for female entrepreneurs? Jane Garvey explores the issues with Sally Goodsell of Finances SouthEast and Julie Meyer, founder of Ariadne Capital and dragon on BBC’s Online Dragon’s Den.
Olympic Women’s Boxing
In 2009 boxing became available to women, the last Olympic sport to do so; and in April this year seven women began to train for 2012 alongside the men. They are already making their presence felt on the Women’s Boxing scene internationally and last month women were included in the GB Amateur Boxing Championships in Liverpool for the first time. The tense lightweight final, the first ever women’s bout to be screened by the BBC, saw two women who have already won medals at home and abroad pitted against each other. There was just one point between the new ABA champion, 26 year old Natasha Jonas from Liverpool and her opponent and fellow team GB member, Hartlepool’s Amanda Coulson! Judi Herman went to meet Natasha and Amanda at the ABA training centre at the English Institute of Sports in Sheffield.
Burlesque – saucy fun or self-exploitation?
A decade ago, burlesque erupted in a surprisingly popular underground revival. Many aspects of it have now entered the mainstream but it remains a contentious scene, representing glamour, sisterhood, confidence and fun to some, and reactionary sexual politics and artistic mediocrity to others. Ophelia Bitz, burlesque performer, and Dr Julia Long, lecturer and researcher for London Feminist Network join Jane to explore why burlesque is so popular and whether it’s just saucy fun or purely self-exploitative?
Menopause
Too many GPs lack interest or expertise in the menopause and its treatment according to Dr Sally Hope, a GP from Oxford with special interest in women’s health. She’s been involved in the setting up of an Oxford University backed website on which women talk about their widely varying experience. Dr Sally Hope and Consultant Gynaecologist at West Middlesex Hospital, Elizabeth Owen discuss the latest views on HRT and more.
