  • Salmon Rivers: River Lochy

    Salmon Rivers: River Lochy

    The River Lochy is the biggest river on the west coast of Scotland and the only salmon river in Lochaber. In common with other salmon rivers, the Lochy has borne witness to a huge decline in the numbers of wild salmon and sea trout. As numbers have reduced, salmon farms have been established in Scottish river estuaries. Dougie Vipond discovers what effect fish farms have had on angling and how fishery authorities are fighting back.

    If you want perfect, productive soil in which to grow food you need the help of the humble earthworm to get oxygen into the ground. But a major threat to our soil has emerged in the shape of an alien invader - the New Zealand flat worm. Sarah Mack investigates the problems it poses to farmers and gardeners.

  • Salt Pans

    Over the course of the summer a team of archaeologists have been carrying out their final excavations on the Brora Salt Pans. There they have been excavating a building likely to date from the late 1500s, when the Earls of Sutherland first established salt pans in the Brora area. Euan McIlwraith visited the team to find out what they have unearthed.

    The Scottish Crop Research Institute houses the Commonwealth Potato Collection, a gene bank held in trust for humanity. Started in 1938, it is a great store of genetic diversity for research and breeding. Nick Nairn hears how work carried out at the SCRI is helping to tackle potato blight.
