Pause for Thought
From Canon Ann Easter, Chairman of a charity and Chaplain to the Queen
We had a lovely holiday, warm and sunny, with far too much good food and wine - but, as always, the best bit for me was coming home.
Home, to my bits and pieces, all the familiar smells, the comfort of my own bed and a nice cup of tea!
In a way, being away from it makes it all the more dear.
We all need a home; a place where we feel safe and and at ease, a place where we can kick off our shoes and relax.
But I´m sad to say that, in this twenty first century, there are too many people in this country who haven’t got a home.
Where I work, we offer supported housing in hostels for 16 to 25 year olds - we help them to sort out what they want to be and do with their lives and to find the training to enable that to happen, and we help them to look after themselves, to cook and manage their money, what to do when a button falls off and how to get on with other people. The sort of things that our families gave us when we were growing up.
However homeless people of all ages need support as they address often long-term issues of alcohol and drug abuse, relationship breakdown and mental illness. Some people have been in prison or in the forces, and they have lost the knack of making their own decisions.
Homeless people are surprisingly like you and me; many had jobs and families, but when problems and difficulties came, they didn´t have the support or coping mechanisms that we´ve been blessed with. The downward trajectory of their lives is frighteningly fast and they lose so much.
But they´re God´s children just the same as us; homeless people want and deserve not just a roof over their heads but a place to call home.
