Plus we discover how eminent cartoonists Martin Rowson and Posy Simmonds go about turning great works of literature into graphic novels.
The Madness of King George III
This is the first major UK tour of Alan Bennett's critically acclaimed play. Set in 1788, King George begins his descent into madness following the loss of the American colonies. Susan Penhaligon plays Queen Charlotte and Simon Ward is King George III. In the 1994 film adaptation Nigel Hawthorne won an Oscar nomination for his sensitive portrayal of the troubled monarch.
62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards
Jimmy Fallon hosts the glittering ceremony from Los Angeles. Leading this year's nomination is the TV musical 'Glee' with nods in 19 categories. Hot on it's heels with 17 nominations is 'Mad Men' which has been voted 'Best Drama' for two years running. British actor Hugh Laurie is hoping to pick up the award for Best Lead Male in a Drama Series for 'House' but he's up against Michael C Hall as Dexter Morgan. Meanwhile Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith go head to head in the category Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for 'Return To Cranford' and 'Capturing Mary' respectively.
The Big Fellah
Max Stafford Clark's Out Of Joint theatre company present a touring production of Richard Bean's new play The Big Fellah. Set among New York's Irish American community, young fireman Michael Doyle decides to live up to his Irish heritage but allowing the IRA to use his Bronx apartment. This story of love, dillusion and betrayal runs at the Corn Exchange, Newbury from the 2nd to 4th of September prior to a national tour.
Estelle Lovatt's Art Exhibition Review: 'Surreal Friends'
This new exhibition reveals how Mexico became a refuge for women artists fleeing conventionality and conflict. The 'Surreal Friends'on display are English painter Leonora Carrington, Spaniard Remedios Varo and Hungarian photographer Kati Horna.
The exhibition runs at the Pallant House Gallery, Chichester until Sunday September 12th.
Another World: Dali, Margritte, Miro and The Surrealists
This exhibition tells the story of the Surrealist movement which was founded in Paris during the early twenties. It was a direct reaction to the horrors of World War I and many artists followed the work of Sigmund Freud by analysing their dreams and the unconscious. On display are Duchamp's 'Fountain, work by Picasso, photography by Man Ray and sculpture by Giacometti. Among the British Surrealists represented are Paul Nash, Edward Wadsworth and Roland Penrose.
It runs at the Dean Gallery, Edinburgh until Saturday January 9th, 2011.
Pioneering Painters: The Glasgow Boys 1880 - 1900
Not only is this the first major exhibition devoted to this influential group of artists since 1968, it's also the the definitive Glasgow Boys exhibition, comprising around 100 oil paintings and 50 works on paper.
All the important artists associated with the group are represented, including James Guthrie, EA Hornel, George Henry, Joseph Crawhall and Arthur Melville.
Works from Glasgow Museums' collections will sit alongside other major pictures brought together from public and private collections across the country. It runs at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum until Monday September 27th.
Cross Purposes Shock and Contemplation in Images of the Crucifixion
Ben Uri is the first UK Museum and the first Jewish Museum internationally to explore shock and contemplation in images of the Crucifixion. Twenty-one artists bring a very personal account of the Crucifixion where modern imagery hangs beside the more tradition. Among the mix of Jewish and non-Jewish artists is work by Marc Chagall, Maggi Hambling, Tracey Emin and Graham Sutherland.
It runs at the Ben Uri Gallery, London until Sunday September 19th.
Volcano: From Turner To Warhol
Aptly timed to coincide with the Icelandic volcano eruption, this is the first exhibition to celebrate the extraordinary artistic outpourings that volcanic eruptions have triggered over the past five centuries.
The work on display ranges from early engravings, showing imagined cross-sections of the fiery centre of the earth, to an explosive series of paintings by Joseph Wright, J M W Turner and Andy Warhol.
The exhibition runs until October 31st at Compton Verney, Warwickshire
