Trying for a baby after a miscarriage – how long should you wait?

Guidelines from the World Health Organisation advise women who have had a miscarriage to wait for six months before trying again for a baby. But new research from the University of Aberdeen suggests that there is no need to delay. The study found that women who got pregnant again less than six months after a miscarriage actually had a better chance of a healthy pregnancy. Dr Sohinee Bhattacharya, the author of the report, and Ruth Bender Atik from the Miscarriage Association join Jane to discuss.

Should there be quotas for women in the Irish Dail?

A debate has been going on in Ireland in the past couple of weeks over the number of women in the Oireachtas - the Irish parliament. According to the latest Inter-Parliamentary Union figures, Ireland ranks 82nd in the world with regard to women’s representation. Labour Senator Ivana Bacik and Fianna Fáil TD Mary O’Rourke join Jane to discuss whether the adoption of a quota system is the best way to get the numbers up.

What’s it like to be a child refugee?

A series of children's books called 'The Refugee Diaries' tell real child refugees'stories in their own words. Gervelie’s Journey follows her flight from Civil War in the Republic of Congo via unrest in the Ivory Coast and on to England where she now lives with her dad. Mohammed was born in Kirkuk - the Kurdish part of Iraq. His journey started in October 2000 when Saddam's soldiers came to his house, beat him and his mother and took his father away. The third journey is that of Hamzat, from Chechnya. In 2001 he was on his way to school in the capital Grozny when he stepped on a landmine. His leg had to be amputated and he came to the UK for expert treatment. All three are now British teenagers. They recently met for the first time - Womans Hour was there.

'The Refugee Diaries' by Annemarie Young and Anthony Robinson are published by Frances Lincoln (for children aged 8+)
