  • Pause for Thought

    From Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor

As you may suspect from my name, I have an Irish background.

Say what you like about the Irish, there is no doubt that they are a very hospitable people. Go into a home and it is rare that you don’t meet a warm welcome and the kettle is put on for a cup of tea.

Teapots pour more than tea - they pour kindness too. I suppose it is inevitable that in our time, there has to be high walls; security cameras, sophisticated alarms and peepholes on the front door.

But hospitality does not always have to give way to modernity.Hospitality is not only an ancient ritual - it is also an aspect of love.

There was a lovely reading from the gospel last Sunday. It was about two women, Martha and Mary. Martha is in the kitchen making tea and cooking the meal while Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to Him. Martha says to Jesus: “for goodness sake, will you tell that woman to get up and give me a hand!”

But Jesus says very gently: “Martha, I know you are engaged in cooking the meal; however Mary is doing something even more important - namely being quiet and listening to Me.”

Now I suspect that most of you listening to me this morning are Marthas; busy about many things, often in a rush, preoccupied with the troubles and trivialities of life.

So what I want to say to you is – slow down. Pay more attention to the Mary side of your character - the reflective side, the prayerful side. Life can be choked by busy living - take time off to be still, to meditate - to be with God.

You will find it well worth it.
