Other Information
St Mary’s Choir - St Mary's Cathedral Choir in Edinburgh was consecrated in 1879, and is one of the masterpieces of the great Victorian Gothic architect Sir Gilbert Scott, who designed dozens of other churches as well as the Albert memorial and St Pancras station.
Music is an integral part of the Cathedral's ministry. The Cathedral has the only choir in Scotland to sing daily services; and was the first Cathedral choir in Britain to admit girls to sing alongside the boy choristers, and in 2005 admitted the first female alto choral scholar. Its choristers are pupils of St Mary’s Music School.
St Mary's Music School is Scotland's specialist music school as well as the Choir School of St Mary's Cathedral. It was opened in 1880 to educate choristers for the then newly built Cathedral. Nowadays the school has a much wider remit and since 1972 the school has also educated young instrumentalists, composers and singers.
The Choir, uniquely in Scotland, maintainings a daily choral tradition and sings over 250 services every year. The choristers are educated at St Mary’s Music School, which acts as the choir school for the cathedral, again unique in Scotland. St Mary’s Cathedral became the first in the UK to offer girls scholarships to sing with the boys as trebles in 1978. The choristers are educated at St Mary's Music School, which also trains instrumental musicians.
Exultate Singers - Exultate Singers, a choir of 40 accomplished singers, was founded in September 2002 by David Ogden to sing Sunday Morning Worship in a live broadcast on BBC Radio 4. They have given over 90 concerts, several more radio broadcasts and has appeared on BBC television.
Coventry Singers - The Coventry Singers is a chamber choir, many of whose members are drawn from choral groups based at Coventry Cathedral. The choir has recorded several CDs of Taize music for Kingsway, broadcast every year for BBC Radio 4's Daily Service and are often heard singing on Radio 2's Sunday Half-Hour. A small ensemble from the group was in Rome in June 2009 for the 25th Anniversary of the International Church Music, performing in the Basilicas of San Giovanni Lateran and Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Pantheon. The Coventry Singers were formed and are directed by Paul Leddington Wright.
RSCM Millennium Youth Choir - THE R.S.C.M MILLENNIUM YOUTH CHOIR
The Choir was founded in 1999 at the suggestion of the Archbishop of Canterbury, offering young singers from the ages of 16 to 23 years the opportunity to sing in some of the UK’s most beautiful sacred buildings. You can hear the choir perform next on the BBC on the 30th September in a broadcast of choral vespers from San Rufino Cathedral, Assisi, Italy at 4.00pm on BBC Radio3
