Presented by Aled Jones from Bath

  • Interviews

  • Rev. Paula Hollingsworth

Paula has completed an MA thesis on the spirituality of Jane Austen. Paula was interviewed about what Christian faith meant to author Jane Austen, one of Bath's most famous residents, who was often critical of clergy in her novels. Paula explained that Jane Austen's Christian faith was from the "holiness" tradition, where faith was about inner reflection and personal growth, and that her criticism of clergy was always criticism of them in their social role rather than their religious role. Paula is based in Leicestershire.

  • Martin Palmer

Martin's organisation, based in Bath, is the Alliance of Religions and Conservation - its focus being the relationship between religion and the landscape and conservation. One of Martin's areas of interest is the spirituality of the city and he has written books about what makes a landscape sacred. Martin was interviewed about the challenge which Bath faces to preserve its Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Georgian past with the needs of a modern city.

  • Alastair Gibson & Des Brown

Alastair and Des were interviewed about the refurbishment of St Swithin's Church, the host church for this Songs of Praise. The church had become dilapidated and badly in need of repair, and in order to carry out the necessary work, the church had to challenge English Heritage's restrictions on work on listed buildings. The building has now been transformed from a broken down church into a place which welcomes the whole community.

Jo helped to set up The Graff Project, which Nick now runs on a weekly basis. The project, operated by Bath Youth For Christ, aims to provide young people with the opportunity to develop their spray-painting talents without getting involved in illegal graffiti. Bath Council is supportive of the Project and has provided a site where young people can spray paint legally.

  • Anthony Nanson

Anthony teaches Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and is also the Founder of Bath Storytelling Circle which meets monthly in a Bath pub. Anthony explains that the power of storytelling is that it invites the listener to participate by imagining and interpreting the story in his/her own way. Likewise in Anthony's faith, he is struck by the fact that Jesus told stories but did not write anything down, thus permitting the listener to interpret for his/herself the significant points of the story.

  • Camilla Kerslake

21-year-old rising star Camilla Kerslake realised her lifelong dream with her eponymously titled debut album, released November 16th 2009 on Mercury Records.

Recently signed to Gary Barlow’s new Future Records label, Camilla’s exciting future holds no limits.

Early last year Camilla ‘camped’ outside a London studio determined to give Gary the demo tape she had saved up to record. Her persistence paid off and he eventually listened. “I was instantly captivated by it,” Gary admits. “Her voice is a unique and powerful instrument.”

Camilla was the special guest for two Christmas shows with Il Divo at Hammersmith Apollo (December 7th, 8th 2009). Accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Camilla joined Il Divo onstage for two duets as well as having three solo performances. Recently she sang the national anthem before the Carling Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
