    the British public has mumbled

the votes were cast – the deed is done
the moment’s past – the house is hung

and it’s kind of what we wanted though we don’t all understand
the crucial/subtle difference between being hung and hanged

so although the mould’s not quite been broken
perhaps we’ve scraped some off instead

    we, the Electorate, have spoken
we’re just not quite sure what we’ve said

    about a bee
(or I’m not an entomologist but I know what I like)

    with a low matchmaking murmur
from bloom to bloom fumble with fervour
    the honeybees

    we owe them
    but let’s not assume
    we know them

for we project onto the bee
    utopian society
    their attitude, their industry
    the bee’s seen as exemplary

    I’ll quarrel with the moralists:

    the bee to me
    is seasonal accessory
    nature’s necessity

    honey maker, pollen picker
    stamen shaker, pistil licker

    floating voter
    stigma stroker

    window basher, private dancer
    picnic crasher, lip enhancer

    black and yeller hive dweller
    anaphylaxis point of access

    unexpected aviator, blind dater, pollinator
    distant lawn mower impersonator

    metaphor provider, inflorescence inspector
    hairdo inspirer, nectar collector

these things and more are what make me
make much ado about a bee
