  • Pause for Thought

Christina Rees, writer, broadcaster and member of the General Synod.

Not only is it Friday but it’s the date of William Shakespeare’s death and it’s also St George’s Day. St George is, of course, the patron saint of England, even though he wasn’t English, and he’s the patron of so many other countries that the list reads like the line-up in the Eurovision song contest: Greece, Portugal, Spain, the Republic of Macedonia, and on and on...
The strange thing about St George is that no one really knows why he became so popular, but he’s associated with joy and being blessed by God. In some countries people bless their homes and their children, and farmers bless their fields in the name of St George. He’s also the patron saint of the scouting movement and English people take his flag to football and rugby games and cricket matches.
St George is often pictured killing a dragon with a spear, often from on horseback, and this is a particularly odd part of his legend. Even though historians think he was real, and was really killed for his Christian faith way back in the fourth century, the dragon bit was added on later – from a story about a man rescuing a woman who was just about to be eaten by some sort of monster.
I like the fact that we have a brave and virtuous patron saint and he must have done wonderful things and cared about people, but I can’t help wondering what he would be doing if he was around today. This week I went to the meeting of a group of people all working in various ways to end violence against women. I’d like to think that’s what St George would be doing, rescuing women in danger and distress and helping them to feel safe – blessing them, you could say, in the name of God.
