    Track: Asha Bhosle - Karle Pyar Karle
    Recipe: Red Split Lentils With Cumin Seeds

    200 g (7 oz) Red Split Lentils, (check if there's no tiny stones)
    1 liter (1 ¾ pints) Water
    2 Slices Ginger
    ½ tsp Ground Turmeric
    3 Tbsp Ghee or Vegetable Oil
    salt to taste
    1 tsp Cumin Seeds
    1 tsp Ground Coriander
    ¼ tsp Cayenne Pepper
    2 Tbsp Finely Chopped, Fresh Coriander

    Put lentils and water in a heavy pan. Bring to a boil, removing any scum that collects at the top.

    Add the ginger and turmeric.Lower heat half cover and simmer gently for 1 hour or or until the lentils are soft, stirring to prevent sticking at the end.

    Add salt to taste (about 1/2 tsp) and remove the ginger.

    Put the ghee/vegetable oil in a separate pan on a medium heat. Put in the cumin seeds. Let the seeds sizzle for a few seconds. Then put in the coriander and cayenne. Stir once and then quickly pour the sizzling mixture into the pan with the lentils. Stir to mix.

    Sprinkle the fresh coriander over the top when you serve, and add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice if you fancy. Put some great music on and eat in a bowl on it's own or with basmati rice/naan bread.

    Serves 4-6
