  • Pause for Thought

From Andy Puddicombe, Meditation expert and former Buddhist monk

They say the average brain weighs just three pounds...although as the years go by, I’m starting to suspect mine weighs considerably less.

But what it lacks in size, it certainly makes up for with processing power...transmitting information at an unbelievable speed of 100 million instructions per second. It hurts just thinking about it!

Not unlike a high performance car, the brain is a finely tuned machine, capable of performing incredible maneuvers at lightening speed. But when it’s driven hard and fast, all day long, eventually it’s going to break down.

Unlike the car however, when the brain goes on the fritz, it’s not as straight-forward as simply lifting up the bonnet. If only!

Now in the Buddhist tradition, there’s a really strong emphasis on training the mind through meditation. In fact as a monk in retreat it’s quite normal to spend up to 16, or even 18 hours a day doing just that.

Contrary to popular belief, meditation’s not about thinking, nor is it about trying not to think! It’s more about mentally stepping back, allowing the thoughts to settle in their own time, and in their own way.

And there’s some amazing research coming out of Harvard Medical School, which shows how meditation not only changes the way we think and feel, but how it actually changes the physical structure of the brain itself.

But you’ll be relieved to know Chris, you don’t have to shave your head, slip on a loin cloth and head off to the Himalayas to get these benefits. They’ve found that just 10 minutes of meditation each day can have a profound affect on the way you feel.

So next week, take a moment to appreciate and think about the brain. Or better still, do the brain a favour... and take ten minutes not to think at all!
