Synopsis

Hazel Irvine hosts coverage from Vancouver.

In men's curling, Great Britain begin their campaign against Sweden, who won the European Championship in Scotland two months ago. It's a tough start for David Murdoch's side, but they will be favourites in this opener having won last year's World Championship. Commentators: Steve Cram and Rhona Martin.

The men's figure skating gets under way with the short programme, in which the competitors have to complete a series of required steps, jumps, spins and combinations to music. Yevgeny Plushenko won silver in Salt Lake City and gold in Turin four years ago but the Russian has been plagued by injury since then. Commentators: Sue Barker and Robin Cousins.

The women's luge competition reaches its conclusion. Germany have dominated the event and won all three medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics so it will be a big surprise if one of their team does not clinch gold. But American Erin Hamlin caused an upset to win the world championships in Lake Placid last year and is aiming to become the first American slider to win an Olympic singles luge medal. Commentators: Paul Dickenson and Colin Bryce.

The gold medal in the women's 500m speed skating has gone to Canada in two of the last three Winter Olympics but the favourite in Vancouver is Germany's Jenny Wolf, who improved her own world record in a World Cup meeting in December. Commentators: Hugh Porter and Wilf O'Reilly.

Plus highlights of the eagerly anticipated opener for hosts Canada in the men's ice hockey tournament. Commentators: Bob Ballard and Brent Pope.
