Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of emel Magazine

I had just dropped my girls to school and was crossing the road. A mum was giving her teenage daughter some advice on crossing the road, “Bikes come really fast down here, and they don’t always stop.” advised the Mum.
“Ssssh Mum!” the girl replied impatiently. “You sound like Dad!” The Mum looked hurt.
Before I knew it I could hear myself say to the girl, in my own ‘Mummy voice’, “Don’t speak to your mother like that. She doesn’t deserve it.” I was shocked that my thought verbalised out loud, but not as shocked as the girl looked. Her mother was pretty surprised too, but seemed to smile.
It’s not the first time I have found myself doing these things. Two boys – both around 10 - dropping litter outside a shop, and in full Mummy voice I hear myself tell them, “Now come on boys, pick that up, we all have to live together and take care of things together.” Too surprised to do anything else, they picked up the rubbish.
Then there was the teenager on the train dropping his burger wrapper and tin can, except this time my own children were with me and I told him that he was setting a bad example to my children and to pick it up – which he did.
I can go on with my list, but you get the idea.
My husband thinks I’m mad and will soon get walloped by some unruly teenage who I dare to suggest should be better behaved; but I’m not prepared to just let things pass. If we want a better society we have to work for it.
I also have more faith in these children. With a polite, but firm reminder, they recognise a wrong doing and correct it.
There are a lot of hysterical headlines about children these days – particularly teenagers. For me, there really is nothing wrong with today’s children. But if the adults are not prepared to offer a guiding hand every now and then – either because we’re too lazy, too embarrassed or too scared, then we wont get the best out of tomorrow’s adults.
