Synopsis
Each week Aled Jones plays tracks from a broad musical spectrum, that celebrates both our choral traditions and the vibrant world of modern music as well as spiritually uplifting and reflective music. He also discusses religious and ethical issues of the week with faith representatives.
This week, Aled says Good Morning Sunday to Beth Nielsen Chapman, in the UK for the Celtic Connections festival. And Dr James Smith from the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre in Nottinghamshire, discusses National Holocaust Day and gives the Moment of Reflection.
Beth Nielsen Chapman
Aled welcomes American singer-songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman back into the studio, following a successful operation last year to remove a brain tumour. The benign tumour was discovered after she was struggling writing lyrics for her new album, and was found to be in her left frontal lobe - also known as the language centre. Beth is back, stronger than ever, to perform at Celtic Connections, to release her latest album – Back To Love – and for a UK tour.
Faith Guest - Dr James Smith
Dr James Smith is one of the founders of Beth Shalom, England’s only Holocaust museum. The centre was opened in 1995 by James and his brother Stephen after a visit to the Israeli Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem. When they returned to the UK, they were compelled to create an exhibition to highlight the issues and challenges of the Holocaust.
Today, the Holocaust Centre is a place of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and a place of education, challenge and reflection for all people. It works in partnership with government in the UK and abroad, providing education about the Holocaust and training for professionals. It has inspired similar centres across the world and is home to the Aegis Trust, the genocide prevention organisation, founded by the Smiths in 2000.
James read the poem The Gift Of Choice by Gertrude Hildreth Housman.
Sunday Spotlight - Dave Bankhead
This week the Sunday Spotlight falls on singer songwriter Dave Bankhead. Dave has spent the past 11 years travelling the world, helping divided societies find peace in God’s name through music - in Belfast, Rwanda, the West Bank, Zimbabwe, South Africa. His album Saviour of Nations is a collection of songs that look back over that journey. Aled plays Peace To You - do let him know your thoughts.
