Matt Baker and Julia Bradbury re-kindle some animal magic when they look back at the close encounters they've had with the creatures at the heart of our countryside.

They get up close to some of our best loved native animals at the British Wildlife Centre in Surrey, including some frisky foxes, otters and some very shy red squirrels.

  • Red Kites

2009 marked the 20th anniversary of one of the most successful wildlife reintroduction programmes ever carried out in the UK. Back in June last year, Matt talked to the people behind the project and heard what it's like to live with a red kite in your garden.

  • St Tiggywinkles

St Tiggywinkles is world renowned for its work rescuing and rehabilitating hedgehogs. But, as Julia discovered, they don't just work with the animals that gave them their name. In fact, as the numbers of red kites rise, more and more of them are finding their way into the local wildlife hospital.

  • The Trossachs

Work is underway to create the largest broadleaf woodland in Scotland - the Great Trossachs Forest. Katie travelled to this stunning area to help plant the forest and find out how Highland cattle are used to manage the landscape once the trees are established.

  • Horse Boarding

Horses have been an integral part of life on Exmoor for centuries. But today, instead of being used to pull a plough through a field, they're pulling people as part of a new extreme activity. Horse boarding is the latest adrenaline fuelled sport - and, as Matt and Jules found out, it's hair-raising stuff.

  • Suffolk Punch

The Suffolk Punch Horse was once famous for its use in agriculture, but after the Second World War the population declined to such an extent that it's now endangered. In November 2009, Matt visited one farmer who was doing his best to keep the breed going.

  • Royal Welsh Show

The Royal Welsh show in Builth Wells, Powys, is the biggest event in the Welsh agricultural calendar, and a great place to experience rural and outdoor activities from traditional to extraordinary. Last summer, Julia took on Matt at the fine art of duck herding.

  • Forest Wildlife

In autumn, while some animals are thinking about bedding down for the winter hibernation, the rare fallow deer in Haldon Forest Park, Devon, are at their most active. The annual rut is a ritual parade where bucks make intimidating noises and size up their rivals, before winning a mate. Jules joined a Forestry Commission ranger at sunrise, to get a peek at their extraordinary behaviour.

  • Cornwall

When the seal pup season began last October, Matt joined the Cornwall Seal Group as it set about monitoring the progress of local seals. He also met up with members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, who are on call 24/7 ready to rescue seal pups who've been abandoned, or pregnant mothers in trouble.

  • Skomer Island

Julia headed to Skomer Island, off the Pembrokeshire coast, to discover why this is a location of international importance for seabirds, and what researchers are doing to secure their future.
