Pre-Budget Report
No Chancellor likes to put up taxes a few months before an election but yesterday Alistair Darling did just that. The pre-budget report hit the rich with a so-called "super tax" on bankers bonuses and it tapped anyone earning over 20,000 pounds a year with higher National Insurance contributions. Dr Linda Yueh, Fellow in Economics at Oxford University, explains what's actually at stake in terms of borrowing.

Unemployment Opportunities
The Pre Budget Report included more help for the unemployed, particularly young people. With youth unemployment close to one million Alistair Darling has told the Commons that from next month no-one under 24 needs to be unemployed for longer than 6 months, down from the current 12 months, before being guaranteed work or training. Kevin Green, Chief Executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, tells us what he makes of the guarantee of work or training for young people.

A charity called Pilotlight which provides advice to businesses has been criticised for auctioning off work placements at blue chip companies for thousands of pounds. Heather Collier, director of National Council for Work Experience, explains why she thinks this is unfair.
