Synopsis

Who are your children hanging around with, and what would happen if a fight started? Because of a little-known law called joint enterprise, anyone caught up in a serious incident could face the same jail sentence as the person wielding the boot, knife or gun.

The police say it helps to curb gang violence, but Panorama investigates whether this catch-all policy is also leading to miscarriages of justice.

'We will come for you', gangs warned

Panorama investigates how police are using an old law to charge young people who are present when someone is murdered, even if they did not so much as throw a punch.

Joint Enterprise: Who is guilty?

Panorama reporter Richard Bilton investigates the law of Joint Enterprise and -using a video created for the Metropolitan Police - challenges a group of teenagers to figure out just who is guilty of murder in what begins as a low level confrontation.

Mother welcomes Joint Enterprise

The mother of Tyrone Clark, a teenager stabbed to death in Leeds, tells Panorama about the message that Joint Enterprise sends to young people about the company they keep.

Am I a murderer? 'Honestly - I dunno'

Panorama reporter Richard Bilton meets Kenneth 'Kaspa' Alexander, who was convicted of the murder of Michael Campbell in west London in 2005. Kaspa did not stab Campbell, he did not even carry a knife, but he was part of the gang involved in the street fight.
