I've just bought online a Harris Tweed jacket for my boyfriend. Harris Tweed Scotland Ltd claims that Harris Tweed is the only fabric in the world protected by an Act of Parliament. Is this true? Lydia Walton, North Yorkshire
Monday 16 November - Answer
As far as anyone knows, yes it is. "Harris Tweed" is not a general term for a type fabric like "flannel" or "tartan", but a very specific description whose use is protected by the Harris Tweed Act of 1993. The Act specifies that in order to be called Harris Tweed and carry the Harris Tweed Orb symbol, the fabric must be made of pure virgin wool that has been dyed, spun and finished in the Outer Hebrides. The yarns must then be woven by hand by one of only 115 remaining weavers in their own homes on one of the islands of Lewis, Harris, Uist and or Barra
