THE LMS PATRIOT PROJECT

This edition features an ambitious attempt to create a brand new steam engine. The Unknown Warrior will serve as a permanent memorial to all those who fought and died in the First World War and all subsequent conflicts. The locomotive will be a re-creation of one from the LMS Patriot class, none of which were saved for posterity in the 1960s.
The enthusiasts behind the project have already built part of the engine at the Llangollen Railway and are hoping that when its finished it will wow the crowds just as much as the new engine Tornado has done over the past year. They've been endorsed by the Royal British Legion and want The Unknown Warrior to be a National Memorial Engine similar to one built after the First World War. With the help of the Great Central Railway in Leicestershire, Up All Night's Howard Benson has been talking to the Patriot Team, and to surviving drivers and firemen from the steam era who remember the Patriots in their heyday.
