Synopsis

Jo Whiley is sitting in for Claudia Winkleman with a packed show rounding up all the Arts action. Joining her are a host of stars - musician Ryuichi Sakamoto talks about his fantastic movie soundtracks to Merry Christmas Mister Lawrence and The Last Emperor. Soap star Denise Black talks about her new role as a jazz singer, Sir Michael Caine chats about his new film Harry Brown and there's a film round-up with Nev Pierce.

5 Reasons To Go Out & About

Ways with Words Literature Festival begins next Thursday in the beach-hut lined, seaside town of Southwold in Suffolk, offering 5 days of guest authors chatting about their latest works, including Roy Hattersley, Brian Keenan, Shirley Williams and Michael Buerk.

Take to the water and set sail for the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre near Leamington Spa this weekend for “Launch Yourself” a marine modelling exhibition dedicated to all aspects of marine modelling. Visitors can expect featured displays by clubs and societies, demonstrations and a host of specialist suppliers. From modern power boats to early warships experts will be on hand to give practical advice on marine modelling and knot tying. Visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase whatever they need from everything from a single anchor to an entire kit.

Celebrate Rupert’s Birthday tomorrow with a special visit from Rupert Bear, fun storytelling, craft activities and a chance to discover animation secrets at the Museum of Canterbury. New Rupert Bear illustrator Stuart Trotter will be making a guest appearance to sign the latest annual and there will be a wide range of Rupert merchandise for sale. There’ll also be a Nutwood Treasure Hunt, a chance to make a Rupert scarf and plenty of stories and songs.

On Tuesday Matthew Bourne’s adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s gothic masterpiece Dorian Gray takes to the stage at Birmingham’s Hippodrome until the 14th November. Set in the image obsessed world of contemporary art and politics, this “black fairy tale” tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil.

The Folkestone Book Festival began today - the week-long event features a host of names in celebration of book culture including Vic Reeves, Victoria Hislop, Diana Quick, Kate Moose and Rick Wakeman plus there’s a variety of other events from film screenings and quizzes to cultural walks and workshops that will guarantee something for everyone.
