Synopsis

Jez Nelson presents a selection of solo and duo sets that tackle the challenge of free improvisation in very different ways.

Building on a musical relationship that spans three decades, saxophonist Trevor Watt performs with pianist Veryan Weston in a concert from their 2009 summer tour. Flautist Finn Peters experiments with a computer programme specifically designed to improvise like a human. Using complex algorithms that form a set of rules, there is a recipe to solve a given musical problem. Plus music from Chicago-born cornettist Rob Mazurek, who creates a musical tapestry with layers of electronics pierced by the strong, soaring sound of that instrument.
