Ooompah-pah!

We all know how it goes, but what exactly is Oompah music when it's at home? Well, a new musical that tells the story of the Credit Crunch through modern pop classics, reinterpreted by the medium of Oompah music is proving that where there's muck there's brass. So we met the lederhosen of the pack, Patrick Johns and the lads in lederhosen of Oompah Brass!

Monday 26 October - Question

My usual drive home from Norwich to Cambridge has all of a sudden become an adventure in the dark, thanks to the Autumn, which got me thinking: who decided that car indicators should be orange, brake lights red, and emergency services sirens blue? Come to think of it, why are the rear lights and brake lights the same colour? Shaun Hudson, Cambridgeshire

Monday 26 October - Answer

According to Wikipedia, the colour of vehicle lights has been standardised for years. It was first laid down in the 1949 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and later confirmed in the 1968 UN Convention on Road Traffic. Generally, lamps facing backwards must emit red light, those facing the side and all turn signals should be amber, and lamps facing front must be white or yellow. There are some exceptions to this, for instance in the United States, where you get some rear signals in red... But most studies show that drivers have a quicker reaction to brake lights when the turn signals are amber rather than red. As for the colour of emergency lights, blue is the most common colour used around the world, though there are other colours as well, and that's because it's apparently the colour most easily seen in the dark by the human eye. It became standard here in 1989, with the introduction of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations.
