I want to use a prayer which I have often used in family gatherings. I don’t know who composed it but I know parents find it helpful.
“For that smile I didn’t give you, I am sorry;
For that afternoon I didn’t spend with you, I am sorry;
For that story I didn’t have time to listen to, I am sorry;
For all the times I should have said, “Well done,” and didn’t, I am sorry;
For the hug I didn’t return to you, I am sorry;
For that joke I didn’t laugh at, I am sorry;
For every time that I didn’t have time, I am sorry;
For having belittled you in front of your friends, I am sorry;
For having demanded your love instead of earning it with kindness, laughter and Godly example, I am sorry;
For every time I have taken you for granted, I am sorry;
For understanding my errors and my desire to change,
For your great love, for your respect and forgiveness, I am grateful;
May we be united and loved through the power of Jesus Christ, Amen.”
And here’s a special blessing for those who continue to hand on the faith.
May the blessed God surround us.
May the angels and friends share our journey.
May we walk on holy ground.
May people with faith inspire us.
May wisdom and justice empower us.
May we be wise and strong and creative.
May we celebrate life and hope.
May God’s image grow within us.
May laughter and courage heal us.
May the Gospel of life sustain us.
All the days of our journey home.
And may almighty God bless us all in this world and in the next.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
