Synopsis
Each week Aled Jones plays tracks from a broad musical spectrum, that celebrates both our choral traditions and the vibrant world of modern music as well as spiritually uplifting and reflective music. He also discusses religious and ethical issues of the week with faith representatives.
At the start of Faith In The World Week on Radio 2, Aled says Good Morning Sunday to former Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. This year, Faith In the World Week focusses on Growing Up With God and how children are taught about faith. And Deborah Hollamby discusses the week's news from a faith and ethics perspective and gives the Moment of Reflection.
Michael Morpurgo
In Faith In The World Week, Aled is joined by former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo. Michael's latest work, The Kites Are Flying, has been described as “a plea for peace and unity – set around the Israeli/Palestine conflict”. It reveals how children’s hopes and dreams for peace and unity can fly higher than any wall built to divide communites and religions. The Kites Are Flying is published by Walker ISBN 978-1406317985. Michael discusses the theme of Faith In The World Week, Growing Up With God.
Faith Guest - Deborah Hollamby
Deborah is a TV and radio presenter, including Pause for Thought on Radio 2. She was born in Solihull and attended Birmingham Theatre School before entering the “Daughters of St. Paul”, a religious order that works in the media. Whilst Deborah felt strongly that her years as a Sister were ‘meant to be’ and a preparation for what life had in store for her, she left the convent in 1994. She has since worked in charitable fundraising, marketing, PR and broadcasting but now devotes her time to broadcasting, writing and speaking, and her young family.
Moment Of Reflection
The fiancé shyly asked his intended,
‘Should we have children, will we teach them of God’?
And the young woman smiled knowingly and spoke softly;
‘If our hearts are open
A child, our child,
A small, perfect piece of God’s goodness,
Will bless and bring the gift of faith to us.
Hiding in,
The constant rhythm of easy breathing,
And that trusting nature, caught in a glance,
In the warmth of an eager, mischievous smile,
And the long, sleepless, fraught nights,
Filled with a Mothers comfort,
Through all this,
God will tenderly draw us closer,
And shine the light of love on our lives.
Our home,
Will be filled with the gentle, contagious laughter of God.
And our child’s companions;
Truth, innocence, forgiveness and beauty,
will take their place at our table.
As the seasons come and go,
Meandering through our years,
We will know
That it was in the playground of our family life,
The highs, lows, fears, disappointments and moments of pure exhilaration,
That God was embracing, encouraging and gently chastising,
Reminding us that forever and always he is,
God with us,
Emmanuel.
Deborah Hollamby
The music accompanying Deborah's Moment Of Reflection was Gloria by Libera.
Clare Mulley
Clare Mulley has written an award-winning biography on the life of the founder of Save The Children, Eglantyne Jebb. Eglantyne was a woman who grew up with God, in a wealthy Anglican family that believed very firmly in social responsibility. Considering that she didn’t even like children, it could be argued that Eglantyne fundamentally changed the way the world treats them, through the formation of the Save The Children fund, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which mark their 90th and 20th anniversaries this year.
ACM Gospel Choir
Described as "Absolute Choral Magic" by Russell Watson, the ACM Gospel Choir first came to widespread attention last year, when they reached the semi finals of BBC 1’s Last Choir Standing. The choir was formed 3 years ago by their Musical Director, Mark De Lisser, to give students an understanding of the gospel style. The choir is made up of students from all faiths and none, and sing both religious gospel songs and non-religious contemporary songs, in a gospel style. They join Aled live in the studio to demonstrate the signature sound that wowed judges and viewers alike.
Sunday Spotlight - Marc Cohn
Jewish American singer song writer Marc Cohn grew up in Cleveland, where through the local rock radio stations, he was introduced to the music of Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, and Jackson Browne, all of whom remain among his most enduring influences. Cohn attended Oberlin College, where he taught himself piano and later worked straight jobs, played clubs and coffee houses, wrote songs and sang demos for songwriting legends like Leiber and Stoller and Jimmy Webb. A chance encounter in an Mississippi honky tonk with a 70-year-old black pianist and singer Muriel Davis Wilkins inspired the song that launched Marc Cohn’s career. “Walking in Memphis” became the breakout hit from Marc’s self-titled Atlantic debut album, released February 1991.
