No Guarantee

– a risk-assessment sonnet for anyone on the brink of a significant emotional investment

No human love comes with a guarantee
that it will last forever and no-one
would dare ask for a short-term warranty.
What’s here today tomorrow may be gone.

When you’ve been left that’s it. You are bereft.
No company will offer personal cover,
no version of Third Party, Fire and Theft
with No Claims Bonus for a long-term lover.

There could be no financial compensation
for love that’s lost. It’s simply too expensive.
As yet no known form of remuneration
could meet a claim on Fully Comprehensive.

There are no guarantees – so let’s be honest:
a heart can break as easily as a promise…

Post

yes I know it’s a shame
to see postmen stand on pickets
with their hands deep in their pockets
when they could be popping packets
through our hungry letterboxes
while their leaders and their bosses
play pass the parcel with the blame…

but let’s not knock it – make the most
there’s never been a better time
to say the cheque is in the post…
