Synopsis

With fun, features, business, music, sport and travel.

Be A Wise Old Owl... Use Your Library!

Philosopher Cicero said "To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul" But just who is it who decides what tomes feed the spirit and stimulate the nation's synapsis? To find out just how they select the hardbacks that end up in these hallowed stacks we spoke to the brilliantly bookish head of libraries and heritage for York and president of the society of chief librarians Fiona Williams.

Tea-Potty

Our next guest has such a large collection of Tea Pots that she has a whole island to house them! With over 6000, she really knows what she’s talking a-spout and is steeped in the art of tea pot perfection. We went live to Kent to get cosy with Sue Bayze, owner of Tea Pot Island…

Wednesday 21 October - Question

I recently opened a bag of sports mixtures and was surprised to find that the black sweets no longer taste of liquorice and in fact taste of blackcurrant. Please could you tel me when this happened and why? Wayne Wright, Leeds

Wednesday 21 October - Answer

Something I've discovered from working on this show is that people get incredibly wound up when manufacturers mess around with their sweets. There are several online petitions on this subject - all calling for the liquorice flavour to be brought back. What happened is that the Lions brand, which made Sports Mixtures for years, was bought by Maynards recently, and THEY decided to change the flavour to blackcurrant because they thought it would be more popular. It was a very controversial decision. I do have some good news though, for people who hanker after the old liquorice flavour. A listener called Lucy Scott-Paul, who owns a sweet shop called Bah Humbug in North Yorkshire, has been in touch to inform me that you can still get the original Lions Sports Mixtures in bulk, in traditional sweet shops, with the original liquorice flavour.
